My Favourite Patent "My favourite invention is stainless steel, one form of which was developed and industrialized in the Brown-Firth laboratories in Sheffield, although the American Elwood Haynes was the first to apply for a patent on this material, in 1912. This extraordinary high performance material is now found everywhere, from wine fermenters and gas turbines to cutlery, as well as famous buildings such as the Chrysler building in New York. Quite simply, stainless steel is found everywhere, including the kitchen sink! "
