"My favourite invention is the underwater breathing apparatus known as SCUBA. Developed by Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan in the early 1940s, the original "Aqua-lung" (still a registered trade mark in the US) was the subject of a patent that expired in the early 1960s. Though the original design has been subject to some modifications, the same regulator technology still exists in the open-circuit scuba apparatus in mass production today, and this enables countless recreational divers (including myself!) to safely experience the magic of the underwater world. "
Michael joined Haseltine Lake in 2006 and qualified as a trade mark attorney in 2010. Michael works for clients in a variety of industry sectors, including foodstuffs, medical equipment and insurance. His experience spans a wide range of UK, European and overseas trade mark matters, including trade mark clearance searching, strategic advice in relation to trade mark opposition proceedings, arguing the case for registrability of trade marks and preparing contentious correspondence.
In 2009 Michael completed a 7-week secondment in the in-house trade mark department of a large US corporation. The secondment gave him valuable experience of US trade mark clearance work and prosecution as well as insight into the US corporate world and the relationship between in-house and external legal counsel.
In 2011 Michael completed a Postgraduate Diploma in UK, EU and US copyright law at King’s College London. This enhanced his knowledge of this complex area of law, and enables him to provide specialist advice on the subsistence, scope and enforcement of copyright in relevant works, which include product literature, corporate logos and computer software.
Fluent in German and Spanish, Michael spent a year living in Munich and studying at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität as part of his degree course. He regularly visits China, where he has spoken at a number of IP seminars, and is currently learning Mandarin Chinese.
