"My favourite invention of choice is the biro. The first ball point pen was patented in 1888, but it was until 1938, after many failed attempts by various inventers over the years, when Mr Biro invented the modern version of the ball point pen, which is so commonly used nowadays that many people simply refer to it as a biro. Although the biro seems like a very simple and uncomplicated device, it makes writing so much more accessible for many people - imagine still having to carry a pot of ink with you and refilling your fountain pen. "
Olivia qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2011.
Prior to joining the Leeds office of Haseltine Lake in October 2008, Olivia graduated from Imperial College with a Masters Degree in Physics, and subsequently completed a PhD in Physics at the University of Heidelberg, where she researched on theoretical models for high-energy radiation processes in active galactic nuclei.
Olivia is involved in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications in the U.K. and in Europe, and has experience in conducting novelty searches, and advising on novelty and infringement issues. Olivia has worked on a wide range of cases including inventions relating to telecommunications technologies, electronics, computer network security and electrical generators.
Olivia is fluent in Cantonese Chinese and has a working knowledge of Mandarin Chinese. She completed a secondment at a major intellectual property law firm in China in 2009, where she gained valuable knowledge and experience of Chinese patent and trademark prosecution and litigation.
