"My favourite invention is a winch for winding up or winding out a sail’s sheet or halyard. Actually, the basic winch mechanism has been used for civil engineering purposes for millennia, but was adapted for use on yachts only in the late 19th century. This allowed control of fewer, but larger and more powerful sails instead of the many small sails previously set on tall ships. Nowadays, you won’t see any yacht without a winch; this allows the art of sailing to become a leisure activity for anybody. "
Ulrike joined Haseltine Lake in 2010 after having worked in the field of patent law in a German IP law firm since 2004. During that time, Ulrike was legally trained at the 7th Civil Division for patent infringement matters at the Mannheim Regional Court in 2006 and at the German Patent and Trademark Office and the Federal Patents Court in 2007. In 2006, she also obtained experience in the in-house IP department of a major Hamburg-based corporation with international operations. From June to December 2008, she acquired particular experience in US patent law in law firms and an in-house IP department of a US company in the United States of America.
The focus of Ulrike’s studies and research work was theoretical physics, semiconductor physics, optics and experimental solid-state physics, in particular opto-mechanical engineering of solid-state nanostructures. In her role as a patent attorney, Ulrike supports clients in the fields of semiconductor physics, memory components, mobile telecommunications and business and computer-implemented inventions. She has professional experience in prosecuting German, European and International patent rights and handling opposition procedures and litigation matters in technological fields of electrical engineering.
With German as her primary language, Ulrike is also fluent in English and works in both languages. Ulrike is a member of the Patent Attorneys Association (PAK) and The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA).
