After receiving a natural science degree in the analysis of highly repetitive DNA sequences on chromosomes, Ulli continued in scientific research and became a fellow at the Max-Planck-Insitute for Biochemistry, Munich and thereafter at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, taking a PhD in protein secretion in eukaryotes. Ulli joined Haseltine Lake in 1992 and became partner in 1994. Specialising in life science and pharmaceutical patent matters, he has particular experience in genetic engineering, recombinant proteins, peptide synthesis, natural compounds, immunoassays, pharmaceutical formulations and medical devices. Ulli undertakes prosecution cases before the European Patent Office (EPO) where he also handles numerous opposition and appeal cases and regularly appears at oral proceedings. Another focus is patent prosecution before the German Patent Office and infringement and nullity suits in Germany.

Ulli's clients in the biotechnology area are mainly midcap research and development companies, universities and science institutes. As a registered Patentanwalt, Ulli is admitted to the Federal Patents Court, Civil Courts and the Federal Court of Justice, and he regularly advises on contentious issues of employee’s inventions on behalf of US and German clients.

With German as his primary language, Ulli is also fluent in English and works in both languages. A frequent traveller to the USA and the Far East, Ulli is the partner responsible for developing client and business relationships in Germany and is a regular visitor to the US state of Georgia. He is a member of the German Chemical Society, Deutsche Vereinigung für gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht (GRUR), Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Industrielle (FICPI) and International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI).
