Haseltine Lake around the world series 10

26 July 2016

We’re fully into summer now and many of our team have been busy visiting clients, attending conferences and gala dinners around the world. Find out what we’ve been up to below…

Last month, Lisa Williams attended the European Patent Office (EPO) Examination Matters Conference in The Hague, for patent attorneys dealing with the EPO in the patent granting procedure. The American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) held a Diversity in IP conference, which Daniel Chew, Jonathan McCartney, Isobel Finnie, Christine Fenlon and Frances Wilding all attended. It provided an ideal opportunity for debate around what "diversity" and "inclusivity" mean for the IP world, sharing best practices with our US colleagues, and for showcasing the IP community's role in spearheading change. Later in the afternoon, Simon Rees and Frances Wilding attended the AIPLA Diversity in IP event, with a session about US IP Law and Practice. It provided the opportunity to listen to and meet a group of leading US patent attorneys, and learn about recent developments in US law and practice.

Recently, Simon Rees and Michael Conway attended a seminar in London to mark this year’s visit from the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). The event was held jointly with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), the British Association of the International Federation of Intellectual Proper Attorneys (FICPI-UK), the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) and the IP Federation. Simon attended in his capacity as President of FICPI-UK, while Michael was a guest speaker discussing the latest developments in Registered Design protection surrounding the Trunki case.

Over the last few weeks our team have spent a lot of time on client visits in various locations all over the world. David Nash spent a week in the USA, David Lewin and James Ward have been in Tokyo, and Daniel Chew made a trip over to China. To round up the activities over the last few weeks, Frances Wilding, spent a few days in Germany with Stephan Schultes and Robert Margue on client visitations. We also welcome (Ellie) Li Min, our Chief Representative in the China Office (Guangzhou), who is in the UK at the end of July.

Welcoming the new President of The Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA), Kate O’Rourke, Simon Rees and Elizabeth Cooper-Rolfe attended the ITMA Summer Reception on 5th July at the Institute of Directors in London. Joining high profile guests and friends from across the trade mark profession for a great evening. Simon then attended the IP Federation President’s Reception on 8th July after their annual general meeting, commemorating the handover to new President, James Hayles.

Finishing the month on a high, Simon Rees attended the 125th Anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) Royal Charter at the Rosewood Hotel, London. A wonderful evening with a pre-dinner speech by Lord Justice Kitchin, and after dinner entertainment by the Radio 4 comedian, Robin Ince, followed by the profession’s own house band, The Black IPs.
