Partner Simon Rees celebrates one year as FICPI-UK President

07 March 2016

It’s hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since I was elected as President of FICPI-UK (The British Association of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys).

During this time I have attended many interesting meetings and events, even more than I had envisaged before taking on the role. These have ranged from joint meetings with other IP organisations within the UK, such as the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), The Institute of Trademark Attorneys (ITMA) and the IP Federation (IP-FED). In fact on 7 March 2016 the UKIPO will be holding its annual Four-Presidents’ meeting with the presidents from these organisations, where we shall discuss IP issues ranging from Patent Harmonisation, the Unitary EP Patent and Unitary Patent Court, EU Trademark reform, to the promotion of IP services of the UK profession abroad.

In addition to these formal meetings, the role of President of FICPI-UK has also involved attending numerous less formal dinner meetings and social occasions, so visits to the gym have been needed to ensure my suits still fit!

Looking forward, between 10 and 14 April 2016, I shall be attending the FICPI ExCo in Zurich, where delegates from national sections around the word will gather to discuss and ratify the excellent work conducted by the working groups of FICPI, known as the CET Working Groups.

This year is of great significance for FICPI-UK because we are hosting the FICPI American-British-Canadian (ABC) meeting, which takes place in the UK every four years. This year, the event will take place at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport, South Wales, from 19-23 June 2016. The joint ABC conference is not limited to FICPI members from the U.S., U.K., and Canada, but is open to all FICPI members and, of course, delegate guests. I have been busy organising networking events for the afternoon and evening, which will take in the sights, sounds and tastes of South Wales! Further details of the full working programme and social networking events can be found at www.ficpiwales2016.com.

On an ongoing basis, the Council of FICPI-UK and myself also canvas the views of Members of FICPI-UK concerning consultations and questionnaires issued by various bodies in relation to IP matters, so that FICPI-UK can respond to such consultations, adding weight to members’ views.

This week I have been working to secure a guest speaker for our next FICPI-UK dinner meeting on 5th May and I am delighted to announce that The Hon Mr Justice Henry Carr has very kindly agreed to be our honoured guest.

It has been a very busy but enjoyable year - no doubt the next year will go as quickly as this one!
