Getting to know: The Haseltine Lake Records team and the HL Renewals team

In this blog, we want to introduce you to other members of the support teams and find out more about what their roles entail and what they love about working with us. Our Records team is responsible for maintaining and updating case and client records with relevant information. The renewal of granted or registered patents, trade marks, designs and utility models and the payment of maintenance fees is undertaken by the team at HL Renewals LLP, which is a wholly owned subsidiary partnership of Haseltine Lake LLP.

The Haseltine Lake Records team are based in the Bristol and London offices, the HL Renewals team is also based in the Bristol office of Haseltine Lake and we are speaking to three members of the teams:

  • Megan Painter, Records Assistant (MP)
  • Shajila A Aziz, Senior Renewals Clerk in HL Renewals (SAA)
  • Lisa Dalton, Bristol Records Manager (LD)

Q. How long have you all been with us?

MP: November will mark my first year at Haseltine Lake.

SAA: I’ve been at Haseltine Lake and then HL Renewals for five years now.

LD: This September I reached 15 years with Haseltine Lake!

Q. What does your job entail?

MP: At Haseltine Lake, my role as a Records Assistant includes keeping client records up to date and to maintain case notes. This includes adding deadlines, dates or any additional information provided by a client. It’s really important that all the data put into the Case Management System is always completely accurate.

SAA: For me, things vary a lot month to month, but as Senior Renewals Clerk I’m generally responsible for keeping in contact with our clients, providing budget reports and renewal estimates, liaising with agents and clients to obtain legal documents to support renewal applications and filing renewals at national patent and trade mark offices.

LD: Like Megan, the Records team are responsible for maintaining and updating case and client records with relevant information. We spend a lot of time inputting data so we need to be really focused and accurate at all times.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your job and what do you find most rewarding?

MP: I like the variety in my day to day work. Although inputting data is the same process, I am updating different records for a variety of clients, which is each handled by a different team. Everyone at Haseltine Lake is friendly and supportive which makes it a great atmosphere to work in.

SAA: Working as part of a team is brilliant and makes the day really enjoyable! I work with colleagues across the world, and we all bring different skills and responsibilities to the table, but we’re all working together to meet our deadlines for clients, as well as ensuring our case management system is up to date.

LD: Similar to Megan, my role includes similar tasks every day, but because all the clients and teams have many different requirements, the work never feels repetitive. The job requires a lot of attention to detail to ensure no mistakes are made and sometimes even a little detective work into cases!

Q. Why did you choose this career?

MP: I was interested in starting a career within Business and Administration, and an apprenticeship at Haseltine Lake was a great starting point for me. Through my apprenticeship I have completed various units towards my work based qualification and being able to combine real work experience with learning has helped me to develop and progress massively in the short time I have been here!

SAA: When I started in 2011 I originally joined as a Data Entry Assistant to the HL Renewals team and Haseltine Lake Marketing department. I then moved onto a Records Assistant role before my current role in HL Renewals. It’s great that I’ve been able to grow into a position where I can now make use of the experience I have to figure out best practice procedures for future renewals work.

LD: I started at Haseltine Lake all those years ago as a typist in the Leeds office, but I have since moved home to Bristol. I covered an absence role within the Records team when I first moved and have been here ever since!

Q. What’s been the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given?

MP: Practice makes perfect – if you don’t get it right first time, do it again and again until you do!

SAA: Don’t worry about how long it takes to get a job done, what matters is doing it right.

LD: Always ask questions, it saves so much time (yours and other people’s)!

Q. What do you like to do outside of work? Do you have any interesting hobbies?

MP: I spend a lot of my spare time with my family and friends. Bristol is a great city to live in so I’m often out attending different events and going for food.

SAA: I’m a keen reader and really enjoy going through my ‘GoodReads’ online account.

LD: My daughter keeps me very busy outside of work, we usually have lots of craft projects on the go.
