Life at Haseltine Lake

24 October 2016

At the start of the year, Chris Hall (CH) and Andrew Flaxman (AF) joined Haseltine Lake as Associates, as part of its fast growing Electronics team. Now they’ve settled in, we catch up with them to find out how they’re getting on…

Q: Why did you choose to work with Haseltine Lake?

AF: Prior to joining Haseltine Lake, I spent nine years working as a Patent Attorney at another firm. I had a number of friends and colleagues who had worked at Haseltine Lake, and I’d heard only positive things about the firm. I was attracted to the impressive range of clients for whom the Electronics team works, the positive atmosphere among the staff, and the clarity around the goals that the firm hopes to achieve and how my role might help to achieve those goals. When I decided that it was the right time for me to make a career move, Haseltine Lake seemed like the obvious choice.

CH: I completed my training at Haseltine Lake so, for me, this question is really, “Why did I choose to come back?” The answer is pretty simple really – Haseltine Lake was able to paint an exciting picture of how the firm plans to grow, and how I could be involved with and contribute to that growth. Having worked here before, I already knew the clients I’d be working for and the colleagues I’d be working with, and it’s been great to reinvigorate those relationships.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Haseltine Lake and why?

AF: Working as a Patent Attorney can be quite solitary at times, but Haseltine Lake has a great focus on working as part of a team. Staff at all levels work together on projects, and there’s a constant feeling that everyone in the team is willing to help out when needed.

CH: Aside from the prestigious clients that we work for, there is a real sense of teamwork at Haseltine Lake. Patent work involves tracking large numbers of deadlines and handling complex formalities at many stages of the procedure. Each team has a high number of dedicated, qualified patent administrators, who take care of those formalities and manage the whole process. They provide an excellent service to clients (and to Attorneys!).

Q: What sort of clients are you working with?

AF: Having trained as a physicist, the types of clients that I work with are typically consumer device companies and telecoms companies. I’ve also been involved with a lot of work for companies active in the field of medical devices. Representing large multinational companies is great as I become familiar with the technology and I find myself building strong working relationships with inventors and attorneys at those companies. However, it’s also nice to be able to work with smaller companies, such as start-ups and SMEs, as helping them to secure strong patent protection for a product can provide a significant boost to the company.  It’s always rewarding to see a product on the market and to be able to say, “I helped protect that product!”

CH: One of the advantages of working at a firm like Haseltine Lake is that I get to represent household companies day in, day out. With smartphones and mobile broadband becoming essential to modern life, I’m lucky enough to represent a company that designs chips currently in the world’s most popular smartphones, and a company that develops the mobile telecommunication standards on which those phones rely. It’s exciting to think about where the technology in the patent applications I’m writing today will take us all in years to come.  PS – Your appliances are about to become much smarter!

Q: What are you looking forward to over the next 9 months?

AF: My first few months at Haseltine Lake have gone really well, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the next few months and years take me. I’m already planning several overseas trips to visit clients and attend conferences. I’m also particularly looking forward to developing existing client relationships, and as I’m involved with the firm’s graduate training programme, I’m keen to help the trainees through their exams by sharing any experiences that might help them.

CH: More of the same please! I’ve had a great time over the past nine months and if the next nine months matched that, I’d have no complaints. On a more serious note, I’ve been involved with the Technology Steering Group since joining HL, and I’m excited about some of the system improvements being developed, which would should help us to provide an even better, more efficient service for clients.
