Life at Haseltine Lake

06 February 2017

Susan Gregory joined Haseltine Lake in 2015 as part of our Human Resources (HR) team. Now she’s fully settled in, we catch up with her to find out how she’s getting on…

Q: Why did you choose to work with Haseltine Lake?

SG: Haseltine Lake is completely different to anything I’ve ever done before, the uniqueness of the role appealed to me when looking for my next career move. I like a challenge and the role at Haseltine Lake was a blank canvas, so a great opportunity for me to build a strong HR service for the firm.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

SG: There’s not one particular thing I can pinpoint about why I love my job, because there’s so much I enjoy! I like the people I work with, I feel at home in my surroundings, I feel energised and motivated that there is yet more to do, which covers everything and anything to do with the people and the business. Not knowing what each day will bring is something that really appeals to me. I’ve been at Haseltine Lake for almost two years, the beginning was a steep learning curve in terms of fully understanding the wider business, but now I am properly settled in and part of the team.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

SG: Each day varies so much, I don’t have a typical day! One minute I can be working on a strategic project, the next answering queries from colleagues or speaking to a Senior Partner about their recruitment requirements. No day is ever the same and I love that!

Q: How is Haseltine Lake different to your previous roles?

SG: There is very little to compare between my previous roles. Before Haseltine Lake I worked at Bristol Zoo, which are two very different settings! The only thing I miss about the zoo is the stillness before the public arrive, hearing the howl of the gibbons or the roar of the lions was an amazing way to start each day. Working at a zoo always seems like an attractive role to everyone else, until they find out you work with the people and not the animals! But now I have a great view of the River Avon and the quietness and formality of working with attorneys – which suits me perfectly well.

Q: What are you looking forward to over the next year?

SG: I am looking forward to building on the great working relationships I have around the firm by launching various corporate projects. This way the HR service adds value both in an operational and strategic manner. This year’s projects include updating and expanding the induction programme for our new starters, commencing the year of ‘Haseltine Lake Well’ (you can find out more in a forthcoming blog) and better utilisation of our HR database system in three key areas: electronic payslips, online annual leave system and CPD records. It’s going be another busy year!
