My first 100 days at Haseltine Lake

10 July 2017

I joined Haseltine Lake in April this year as a patent attorney in the Electronics and Communications team after gaining my UK and European qualifications at another IP practice. Having spent the past few years completing my training, I was excited yet slightly daunted by the amount of changes I will be faced with in my new role. Fortunately, everyone at Haseltine Lake has been making me feel extremely welcome and I settled in smoothly during these few months. I cannot believe I am already asked to recount my first 100 days here - I had not realised it went by so quickly!

There was one question I was asked quite a few times over the past three months - “why did you choose to work with Haseltine Lake?”. At the risk of sounding horribly cliché, it was the prospect of new experiences that initially attracted me to the firm. I am sure quite a lot of people in the profession will agree that the qualifying exams are one of the biggest hurdles we have to overcome in the training process, and once I was on the other side and had gotten over the blissfulness that is post-qualification, I felt it was crucial for me to take on a position that would allow me to gain further exposure and to develop other important skills. Haseltine Lake has a distinguished reputation both in Europe and China and I am hoping that I can bring my experience and language expertise to the team while learning from some of the best in the profession in different aspects of the job.

My responsibilities at the firm so far include handling a variety of different cases for some of our biggest long-standing clients, some of which involve working closely with litigators on infringement and validity opinions. Last month we paid a visit to one of our client’s in-house counsels and inventors, which was a fantastic opportunity to build and strengthen relationships as well as seeing some of their inventions in the flesh (plus it’s also a great day out of the office!). Although I am based in London, I work very closely with my colleagues in Bristol and I travel to our Bristol office frequently to catch up with other members in the Electronics & Communications team. In addition to the paperwork, I have been involved with numerous meetings and trips focussing on our firm’s business development relating to the Asian (and in particular, Chinese) market. Under the mentorship and guidance of Daniel Chew, our China & Asia Lead Partner, within these 100 days I have already learned a great deal about business development and client-handling strategies.

One of the things I enjoy most about working at Haseltine Lake has to be plentiful chances to travel no matter which stage of qualification you are at. It is wonderful how one of the longest established IP firms in the country has such an incredibly progressive outlook in terms of training and client relations. Haseltine Lake is a very sociable firm that encourages all their attorneys to build strong relationships with our foreign counterparts and clients via face-to-face meetings. In the next 12 months, I am looking forward to visiting some of our clients and associates in China and other parts of Asia and attending a number of conferences and forums to catch up with old friends and develop new connections.
