Interview with Li (Ellie) Min – Our Guangzhou representative

19 April 2018

1. What is your role at Haseltine Lake?

Part of my role is to assist our Chinese clients (who need to protect their IP rights in Europe), by offering them guidance or by liaising with my European colleagues to assist them. My role is to also assist our European clients who need to protect their IP rights in China, by liaising with my European colleagues and with Chinese attorneys. I also spend much of my time attending conferences across the country and visiting with contacts or clients.

2. Why did you choose to work for Haseltine Lake?

Haseltine Lake have been working with Chinese clients for more than 20 years, and have established the Guangzhou representative office since 2009, as the Chinese market is very important and highly valued. There has been a real effort from Haseltine Lake to make working with our Chinese clients easier by really understanding their way of doing business and what their needs are. This also makes my job more rewarding, as I work directly with our Chinese clients, and get to see the positive benefits they receive from working with us. Even though I work from our Guangzhou office, I still feel part of the Haseltine Lake community and enjoy the working environment it offers. I also love my visits to our offices in Europe, meeting new people and catching with old colleagues!

3. What do you most enjoy about your work?

I often visit some of our clients who range from small start-up companies to high-tech companies in a wide range of industry sectors, and so, it’s exciting to learn about their industry, their research and the new products and the developments they have made. It is also fun to meet people in the same profession from all over the world when attending conferences or international IP meetings.

4. What changes have you seen since starting at Haseltine Lake?

I have been working at Haseltine Lake for 13 years now, and it’s clear that there are more and more Chinese clients entering into European markets with a need for IP protection. With increased filings in Europe, Chinese clients are now accepting the western way of charging although some of them still prefer to have cost certainty and predictability. Sometimes I am asked more in-depth questions by our Chinese clients, as they become more familiar with the European procedures.
