Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration delegation visit to the UK

27 June 2018

Last week, Haseltine Lake was pleased to be hosting the Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration delegation, who are visiting the UK during June. The firm has strong links to the Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration, having hosted their visit to Germany in September last year (https://www.haseltinelake.com/media-centre/blog/2017/september/shanghai-pudong-new-area-ip-administration-delegation-visit-to-munich)

Haseltine Lake's lead Partner for Asia, Daniel Chew, along with Partners, Michael Conway and Isobel Finnie organised the delegation’s visits and facilitated the discussions with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), the University College London Business PLC (UCLB) as well as the British engineering company Renishaw. These visits are designed for the Chinese delegation to interact and discuss with a variety of UK organisations, the UK IP processes, management and future priorities in order to help establish a relationship and mutual understanding between IP offices in China and organisations in the UK.

On Thursday 21 June, during the CIPA visit, the delegation was given a presentation to introduce CIPA and the UK IP profession. Specifically, Daniel Chew, on behalf of CIPA, talked positively about "Intellectual Property: why you should choose the UK", and gave a reassuring message that European qualified patent attorneys in the UK can continue representing clients at the European Patent Office (EPO) after Brexit.

While visiting UCLB later that day, the delegation was given a presentation about UCLB and presented with many great examples and success stories about commercialisation of IP and creating spinout companies. The meeting at UCLB was greatly appreciated by the delegation as they were particularly keen to learn about commercialisation of IP which is one of the biggest challenges in China at present. China has been creating IP at a rapid pace in the last few decades, but there has been challenges in IP commercialisation, particularly by universities. More significantly, the main reason for Haseltine Lake selecting UCLB to meet with the Chinese delegation is the fact that they are one of the best examples of UK universities which has been very successful in IP commercialisation.

On Friday morning (22 June) the delegation visited Renishaw, and found it particularly interesting to hear the company’s success story from building the company starting from a patented product, to how it has grown over the last 40 years based on their patented innovations, and their effort in continuing to innovate.

Finally, over the course of the afternoon, the delegation visited the UKIPO where they had the opportunity to interact with officials and learn about their respective organisation structures and key positions at the organisations.

Daniel Chew comments, “I am honoured once again to be hosting Shanghai Pudong New Area IP Administration delegation in the UK. It has been both a very enjoyable and educational experience for everyone. The Chinese delegation will be sharing their learnings with their IP colleagues and companies back in Shanghai that should encourage increased cooperation, investments and IP filings in the UK. It is also a great opportunity for us, the UK IP professionals, to promote our profession and to gain a better understanding of the Chinese IP situation.”

Haseltine Lake has extensive experience in Asia, particularly in China, which is important to the firm’s growth strategy. The firm has had a representative office in Guangzhou, China, since 2009, and is well connected throughout the region.
