First year at Haseltine Lake - An interview with Greg Dykes

19 March 2018

We interviewed Associate Patent Attorney, Greg Dykes from our Energy, Environmental and Engineering team here in Bristol. Greg has now been with Haseltine Lake for over a year and we wanted to know how he was getting on…

1. Why did you choose to work for Haseltine Lake?
Haseltine Lake initially attracted me with their thoughtful approach. From my first contact with the firm, they showed a personal touch and were interested not only in what I could bring to the team, but also in who I was and how they could help me develop. HL have an impressive reputation and prestigious clients but I also noticed that they had a refreshingly honest attitude; they were aware where they had room for improvement and they could clearly illustrate the steps they were taking to make the firm even better. This impression has been confirmed during my time here – even with impressive performance across the firm, we are always striving to improve and experiment with new ideas and approaches.

2. What do you enjoy most about working at Haseltine Lake and why?
I really appreciate the working environment and atmosphere both in my team and in the firm as a whole. The wider HL team, while relatively large for an IP firm, is very sociable and collaborative. I’ve got to know many people across the firm through inter-team work and internal projects, social events, and through day-to-day interactions around the office.

3. What sort of clients are you working with?
I’m the main contact in the Engineering team for two of our clients who operate in the safety equipment and industrial hydraulics fields respectively. During my first year in the job, these clients have been gradually handed over to me by other attorneys. The trust shown in me by HL to handle these clients in my first few years post qualification has enabled me to develop my skills and build strong relationships with them. Our largest multinational clients are too big to be serviced exclusively by one attorney, so I also spend a significant proportion of my time working for these companies. The whole Engineering team collaborates to provide a consistent and seamless service across their cases, typically led by a senior coordinating attorney for each client.

4. What are you looking forward to over the next 12 months?
We are growing in size and stature, so I’m looking forward to meeting and learning from new colleagues who join HL. From a personal perspective, I’m looking forward to further increasing my autonomy and responsibilities, including supervising our trainees, managing our clients, and having the opportunity to visit more of our contacts around the world.
